Beware of Counterfeits

February 12th, 2010

The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.

2 Thessalonians 2:9-10

The character traits that will be so full displayed in the ultimate Antichrist will also be revealed in every generation of the Church Age. John wrote that “many antichrists” had already come in that day, and the same is true for us, which is why we need to be on our guard not to be carried away by dramatic displays by impressive personalities. We need caution and should test the spirits to see if they are of God.

The great tests to prove who is really of God are adherence to the biblical message and a transformed Christlikeness that results in love, graciousness, unity, patience, joy, and every other positive spiritual attribute. Often the counterfeit “miracles” emphasize healings or “financial miracles” and these are merely distortions of the truth. God watches over His own and provides for our needs and heals us when it is in accordance with His will to do so. But the greatest acts that God ever performs are the redemption and transformation of human life.  The proof of the gospel is not that He makes sick men well but that He makes spiritually dead men alive.

The appeal of these counterfeit miracles of every age is their appeal to our sinful nature, to our lusts and our pride. The appeal of Christ is the sheer love He directs our way, He reaches out to us on the level of our heart’s need, not its desire. The world tells us to seek entertainment, or something that we can boast about having done later. Christ, on the other hand, invites us to come unto Him.

Prayer:

Lord, we thank You that You call us to Yourself. We need no demonstrations of Your love because Calvary already was the greatest demonstration imaginable. Let us be satisfied in You. Amen.
