Worrying or Trusting

February 13th, 2010

Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”

Hebrews 13:5-6

Nighttimes have been known to be worry times as well, and often those worries are about money. How many nights have you gone to bed with money woes on your mind, that ruined your night’s rest? Perhaps you have become grumpy and less pleasant to be with than you would want, or turned on those of your family in anger or irritation.

The Lord had a remedy for worry: faith. Biblical faith is not positive thinking, that somehow our woes will all disappear if we just think that they will. Biblical faith is based upon the word of God, upon what God has said. The Bible says much about paying our debts, and any person of honor will seek to do that with all that is within him. But the Bible also assures us of God’s watchcare over our lives. He promises to never leave us and to be our helper. We should go through the day under His Lordship, doing the very best we can in whatever field we work in as He enables us, and then lay down in faith in the evening and sleep well, trusting that God is with us still.

There is often room for repentance in money matters. Perhaps we have been too materialistic or abused our personal credit, or we have been less than gracious with those who owed us. Perhaps we have had too much pride and wanted to live on a level before others that we could not really afford. If pride and lust are in our hearts they will find a way to show up on our financial ledger sheet as well, normally as a deficit. But God can forgive and cleanse of all sins, even financial ones.

Give him the first fruits of your labor. Pay a tithe to the local church with joy for the privilege of giving to the Lord’s work. Then work hard and honestly in your career, trusting that the Lord will honor you and provide for your needs. Find godly contentment in what you have and thank Him for His graciousness to you. Pay your bills on time and be gracious to people for the Lord’s sake. Take every concern to Him in prayer and He will lead you through your financial life in peace and contentment.

Prayer:

Lord, money is not important but it is necessary on this earth. Provide for our needs and lead us to be honest and generous people. Give us peace and joy along the way. Amen.
