Eternal Strength

March 8th, 2011

Your love, LORD, reaches to the heavens,
   your faithfulness to the skies.

Your righteousness is like the highest mountains,
   your justice like the great deep.
You, LORD, preserve both people and animals.

How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!
   People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.

They feast on the abundance of your house;
   you give them drink from your river of delights.

For with you is the fountain of life;
   in your light we see light.

Psalm 36:5-9

If we will live in the daily reality of the power of Almighty God, in His almighty strength and not our own, then we must learn to look beyond our feelings and emotions, and to accept by faith the reality of His greatness and the present availability of His help in our hearts today.

Every line of this magnificent psalm above is phrased to give us glimpses into the majesty of God, of His eternal nature, His character, His holiness, His heart. The inspired psalmist compared God’s eternal traits to familiar things of this material universe – the sky, the tallest mountains, and the deepest ocean – places that we cannot ascend or descend to – and we know that the full knowledge of God’s love, faithfulness, righteousness, and justice are likewise beyond our ability to comprehend completely. However much we may learn about the attributes of God, there is still much more to Him that we are unable to grasp entirely.

But the Spirit-inspired author did not end his psalm with only noting God’s eternal nature; he also brought these truths down to levels that we can understand, that touch our hearts and lives in personal and practical ways. He preserves us, He protects us, He sustains us, and He refreshes us. He is the fountain of life – just as an artesian well brings up water from deep within the earth and provides the liquid our bodies need to sustain physical life, so God out of His eternal character provides for our souls the spiritual nourishment and liquid we need to sustain us inwardly.

Often we run on empty in life, seemingly far from encouragement and hope, often feeling overwhelmed by responsibilities and the pressures of deadlines. We can feel so beat down some days that we hardly believe God still exists, or that His existence would matter to us personally. But, when these thoughts pass our minds, then it is that we need to stop and look up at the highest heaven, consider the deepest ocean, and realize that God’s eternal attributes of love and justice are high and deeper than these. Then we need to bring the thoughts down to earth, to see an animal eating, or a bird sipping water from a leaf, and realize anew that the eternal Spirit of God ministers to our hearts and minds, renewing and refreshing us.

As the rain from the clouds above waters the earth, as the snow on the tallest mountains melts and runs downhill to increase the produce of the land, providing food and sustenance, so the eternal realities of God’s love also nourish our souls and replenish our strength. And it is worth remembering as well, that God restores our souls before He leads us in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.

Lord, let us look beyond the pressures of the day to see the power of eternity that comes into our lives through the ministry of Your Spirit. Amen.
